de opening van de komende audioscoop wordt een wel héle bijzondere: de amerikaanse componist charlemagne palestine – één van de belangrijkste minimal pioniers – bespeelt vanaf 19.30 het carillon van het stadhuis te maastricht. zijn muziek is van een extatische eenvoud en klankenpracht.
vanaf 20.30 gaan we verder bij intro, met o.a. rod summers die zijn ‘live intervention’ presenteert.
the opening of the next audioscope will be a very special one: the american composer charlemagne palestine – one of the most important minimal pioneers – will be playing from 19.30 on the carillon of the town hall in maastricht. His music is form an ecstatic simplicity and the sound are beautiful. the program will continue at 20.30 at in intro, including rod summers who will perform his ‘live intervention’.

Charlemagne Palestine is een begrip in de ‘Minimal Music’, samen met tijdgenoten als Philip Glass, Phill Niblock, Steve Reich, etc.
Ondanks dat Palestine vooral bekent is vanwege zijn intens uitgevoerde pianowerken, heeft hij ook veel composities gemaakt voor elektronische drones en de beiaard (die hij zal bespelen op het stadhuis om 20u30)
Palestine’s bijzondere performances hebben vaak meer weg van een ritueel. Zittend achter zijn Bösendorfer, omringd door opgezette dieren en poppen, grote aantallen kretek’s rokend en cognac drinkend..

Rod Summers (1943 Verwood, Engeland,wonende te Maastricht sinds1973) maakt en produceert al meer als 40 jaar geluidskunst, en is o.a. het brein achter VEC-audio.
Vandaag presenteert hij zijn nieuw werk “The Size of Space”, een geprepareerd stuk met live interventies, waarin zijn fascinatie voor ruimtelijkheid centraal staat.

Wat gebeurt er als een Dj haar specifieke taal gebruikt om een tijdelijke geluids-omgeving te creëren met stedelijke soundscapes?
Herkenbare, alledaagse en stedelijk geluiden worden zo gemixt, dat ze een nieuwe, abstracte omgeving creëren, die een intieme auditieve dialoog met de luisteraars te creëren.
Het resultaat zou verband kunnen hebben met je eigen sonische identiteit? Waar luister je naar? Jd Zazie neemt je mee op een avontuurlijke auditieve trip.

Mixing Cities brengt de realtime geluiden van verschillende steden samen in een audiovisuele installatie. Op vijf locaties worden de omgevingsgeluiden met microfoons direct, live, verzonden naar Mixing Cities.
Het volume van de binnenkomende geluiden kan aangepast worden met de faders. Op deze manier is het mogelijk om te luisteren naar het geluid van een of meerdere steden tegelijkertijd.
Naast het live geluid wordt ook het omgevingslicht van de steden continue gemeten met behulp van sensoren. Deze licht data is vertaald naar de licht intensiteit van de lampen in de Mixing Cities interface.
Door tussen de geluiden van de steden te wisselen, kan de gebruiker zijn eigen reis maken door de steden, en afstand en ruimte op zijn eigen manier ervaren.

A contemporary of Philip Glass, Terry Riley, Phill Niblock, and Steve Reich, Palestine wrote intense, ritualistic music in the 1970s, intended by the composer to rub against Western audiences’ expectations of what is beautiful and meaningful in music. Although his earliest works were compositions for carillon and electronic drones, he is perhaps best known for his intensely performed piano works, which almost seem ritualistic: he generally surrounds himself (and his piano) with stuffed animals, smokes large numbers of kretek, and drinks cognac.

Rod Summers (1943 Verwood, England, Living in Maastricht, NL since 1973) has been producing and recording audio art for more than 40 years.
Now he will take us on his acoustic journey with his new piece “the Size of Time’, a prepared piece with live interventions, where his fascination to spatiality has a central role.

What happens when a DJ uses her specific language to build up a temporary sonic environment with urban soundscapes?
Recognizable sounds, everyday sounds, urban sounds are mixed together creating a new abstract decontextualized environment, in order to create an intimate aural dialog with the listeners.

Mixing Cities brings together the real¬time, live sounds of several cities in an audiovisual installation. The environmental sounds at five locations are picked up by microphones and directly transmitted to Mixing Cities. One can adjust the volume of the incoming sounds by using the faders. In this way it is possible to listen to the sounds of one or more cities at the same time. Apart from the live sound, the current lighting at the locations is registered with sensors and directly translated into the light intensity of the lamps. By choosing and switching between the cities one can make his own journey between the cities and get a different experience of distances and space.
