Kendo Bahn Orchestra is het samenwerkingsverband van drummer Roy Moonen en knoppendraaier Paul Devens. Vanuit de verschillende tradities in de geïmproviseerde muziek, metal, electronoise en jazz worden nieuwe klankgebieden ontsloten. Improvisaties op basis van stilzwijgende afspraken, het aanhalen van clichés en het onmiddellijk verwerpen daarvan en de flow van het moment wijzen de weg op de intense geluidsroute. Ten overstaan van het publiek is er een collisie tussen de respectievelijke inbreng en achtergrond van beide leden van de Kendo Bahn Orchestra.

Als genre-nomade drumde Roy Moonen bij de pop van Kim-Lian, de drum ‘n bass van Liquid Passion en de metal van 37stabwoundz. Moonen is tot op vandaag lid van de internationaal opererende Born From Pain, de fusionband The Count en van de begeleidingsband van Kim-Lian. Met ondermeer Born From Pain staat Moonen op de belangrijkste metal-festivalpodia tussen Toronto, Turijn, Tuzla en Tilburg en in de grotere clubs overal.
Roy Moonen is verder een veelgevraagde studiomuzikant, in die hoedanigheid komt zijn naam voor op de meest uiteenlopende producties.

Paul Devens is zichtbaar en hoorbaar als beeldend kunstenaar die zich met geluid bezighoud en als musicus die met beelden werkt. Architectonische installaties met geluid en video waren en zijn te zien tussen Chicago, Istanbul, Nantes, Oslo en Hasselt.
Als solo-artiest trad Devens op verschillende podia op, onder meer bij de VPRO-studio’s in een project dat via satelliet over 20 landen werd uitgezonden. Devens werkt daarbij met een mix van zelfgebouwde electronica en met op maat gemaakte modulaire software via computers. In de Kendo Bahn Orchestra worden die elektronische processen veelal gestuurd door contactmicrofoons op de drums van Roy Moonen.

Roel Meelkop (1963) studied visual arts and art theory at the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. During a post-graduate course at the same academy he decided to dedicate his work to sound and music. His musical activities date back to the early eighties when he started THU20, together with Jac van Bussel, Peter Duimelinks, Jos Smolders and Guido Doesborg. THU20 have released several tapes and CD’s and performed regularly in Europe.

The working method of THU20 included many discussions about how to compose and why. This period was crucial in forming his ideas and concepts about sound and how to organise it, but it was not until the mid nineties that he was able to fully realise these ideas. The purchase of a sampler and later a computer radically changed his possibilities of working with sound, offering infinitely more control and freedom.
Since then he has worked steadily on a body of work, most of which was recieved enthusiastically in the small but dedicated world of sound art. His other activities include working with Kapotte Muziek and GOEM and organising sound events, mostly in Rotterdam.
Aside from releases, Meelkop also creates site-specific sound installations and performance pieces in collaboration with other artists.

Jos Smolders (Deurne, The Netherlands, October 20th, 1960) studied architecture at the Delft Technical University but quit and continued the musical tape experiments of his childhood. He started musicological studies of electronic and recorded music, was six years co-editor of Vital Magazine. Active in the underground electronic scene, founding member of the renowned Dutch electroacoustic ensemble THU20, he released his own music on cassette, LP and CD. He now works as a sound designer and composer in Tilburg (The Netherlands). Founder of online magazine and mp3 label Earlabs.
