Aart Strootman started working with renowned guitarists at a very young age. By the age of 12 he received lessons from Dick Hoogeveen and Jorge Oraison at the Rotterdam conservatory. After high school he went to Tilburg to study under Hein Sanderink, there he received his Bachelors of Music cum laude in 2008. Decentralized he took lessons with Marlon Titre, Elliott Fisk and Scott Tennant and received his Master of Music with grade 10/10 cum laude at the Hogeschool Fontys & Zuyd in 2010. Besides classical guitar he received a Master of Music Theory at the same institute and at the University of Utrecht a Master of Arts in Musicology.
Since 2009 Aart teaches at the Fontys School of Arts in Tilburg, Aart is also co-programmer of the annual chamber music series at De Link, and together with Arnold Marinissen he is artistic leader of ensemble F.C. Jongbloed. Together with guitarist Bram Stadhouders, he plays music that hoovers between improvised and minimal music under the name of Stadhouders / Strootman. Founded with the support of MuziekLab Brabant and BKKC Aart is founder of minimal-chamber-metal band TEMKO. As a soloist he played recitals from local museums to the Barbican Hall, from Amsterdam to Wellington – mostly on homemade instruments or guitars built by Gimar Yestra. He has played solo with F.C. Jongbloed, Lunapark, Britten Symfonia and the Radio Orchestra of Hessischer Rundfunk and will perform with the New York Philharmonic in May 2014.
Besides that he is guitarist at ensemble Lunapark, Flipside Paradox and played together with dance companies T.R.A.S.H. and Club Guy&Roni. As a composer Aart is working for the theatre collective EELT and wrote music for numerous theatre plays. Also he wrote music for F.C. Jongbloed, DissonArt Ensemble and diverse soloists.
