Finissy For All
Saturday 12 November 2016 / Conservatorium/Café Soiron,
Sunday 13 November 2016 / Conservatorium,
– Are you that composer who likes to walk unbeaten paths?
– Enjoys working for and with amateur musicians?
– Wants to take up the challenge of ‘open score’ composing?
Then don’t hesitate to come to Maastricht to get feedback on your ‘open score’ composition during a masterclass of the renowned English composer Michael Finnissy. Finnissy stood at the very heart of the creation of CoMA UK in 1993 and CoMAMaastricht in 2011. He composed several ‘open score’ works himself, amongst others Plain Harmony and Molly House.
Some of the new compositions will be performed by Ensemble 88 during the Sunday afternoon concert.
All professional composers may submit a work. Composition students and beginning professional composers however will be given priority in placement.
All masterclasses are open to anyone interested.
What to expect?
Feedback will be given on artistic as well as technical aspects. During the masterclass the composition will be performed live by Ensemble 88.
There is room for 6 participants: every participant will get a masterclass of one hour. On Friday the 11th of November there is room for 2 and on Saturday the 12th of November for 4 composers.
‘Open score’ composing will be a total new experience for most composers.
2. Seminar by Michael Finnissy
On Friday evening Michael Finnissy gives a seminar about contemporary composing and more specific ‘open score’ composing. He will be concentrating on amongst others notation and instrumentation.
Anybody is welcome.
On Saturday evening the 12th of November Ensemble 88 will perform both music of and music proposed by Michael Finnissy. The concert will start with a joint ensemble of CoMA members from Maastricht, the UK and Berlin, playing some ‘typical’ CoMA compositions. At the end of this evening Michael Finnissy will present a ‘Cabaret’ in Grand café Soiron (only for participants and invited guests).
On Sunday afternoon the 13th of November the performance of Michael Finnissy’s allcomers composition Maat strikt will be the centre piece. If possible some of the small ensembles will also perform the piece they have been working on. Furthermore Ensemble 88 will play some of the compositions of the young professional composers participating in the festival.
4. Participating in the large Allcomers Ensemble
To experience first hand playing ‘open score’ music, we cordially invite composers to come and play in the large Allcomers Ensemble. This ensemble will rehearse the especially for this festival composed work Maat strikt by Michael Finnissy.
