Tannhäuser

Tuesday 17 May 2016 / 20:30 / Intro (werkplaats),

Literature festival TilT (TIlburg) commissioned a piece by guitarist/composer Aart Strootman as a reaction to a recent literary work of a Dutch poet of his own choosing. Aart chose Han van der Vegt’s posy ‘navigatiesystemen’. One of the poems is called Tannhäuser. A title which has inspired many a composer to write music over the last centuries.

TEMKO makes the connection between the adventurous text, in which the discovery of Venus as a planet / person is described, and Wagner’s famous opera – infamous for it’s endless melody and comprehensive scale. Aart listened to Tannhauser several times and fell in love with the first 90 seconds of the hours long opera. He posed himself the challenge to get all the material for his 35 minute piece from these first 90 seconds of Wagners opera.

The overture put under a magnifying glass almost seamlessly connects to Han van der Vegt’s words. Existing images, sounds, stories and sonorities are poetically stretched – creating something altogether new…
