About intro
Workshop and production house for contemporary music
Intro in situ is a platform for new music and a workshop for the art of sound. Intro in situ programs, on a yearly basis, a theme-based series of hall music concerts for the Theater at the Vrijthof in Maastricht. In the intro in situ’ workshop artists-in-residence get the opportunity to develop and execute projects in the area of sound-art. Besides that ‘in situ’ performs “certain presentations on location”. Material as well as immaterial cultural inheritances will be the starting point here. With the presentations on location sound-landscapes, performances, installations and actual music will be combined.
History
The foundation Intro was established in 1984 with as goal to follow up as well as to provide an overview of the interesting developments coming up in the area of chamber music of the 20th century. Intro has developed itself into the most important provider of contemporary music in the area of Limburg and handles the demand thereof especially in the area of Maastricht. (Specifically for the “Theater aan het Vrijthof”).

In 1997 the music / sound-workshop ‘in situ” was created. In situ (a part of the intro foundation) dedicated itself towards all the different facets of sound and thus searching for the dialog with the ambient environment, the environment within which the sound develops itself. The objective is to create composed “sound-landscapes” within specific ambient environments.
Composers, musicians, sound artists, sculptors and other artists are given the possibility to create and expose these sound-landscapes through the medium of pe! rformances and concerts. These compositions and sound-landscapes find their inspiration in “the soul of the location” (Genius Loci), in the form of the soul of places in gardens, landscapes and cities, a soul theses places have obtained through their history: the signs and remnants which have remained through the continuous process of growth and decline, death and rebirth. As direct environment an actual place (like a city or the countryside) or a virtual location can be utilized.
Intro in situ is part of the Vereniging van actuele muziek podia en producenten (VAMPP) (=Union of contemporary music platforms and producers), which is a branch organization for the so-called “actuele muziek in Nederland” (=contemporary music in the Netherlands).
Contemporary music is a collective term for musical genres such as: present-day composed and modern-classical music, contemporary electronic music and improvised music, the art of sound, music theater and multi-media projects. The common denominator within this extreme divers landscape we believe is the outspoken desire and urge of the platform to move and extend the limitations of the so-far known musical parameters, to introduce new concepts and opinions to music and to search for new mediums of presentation.
Currently the VAMPP consists out of ten platforms, spread out over the country, and will in the near future be expanded with new platforms for the purpose of contemporary music with the purpose to ! create a counter-sound against uniformity and commercialization, which will be clearly audible and understandable. VAMPP offers a favorable growth environment for all types of collaborations: different types of knowledge exchanges, the practice of so-called ‘good practices’ in addition to, and not of least importance, the initiation of co-productions and / or the exchange of projects from individual platforms. So, artistically ambitious as well securely rooted within the daily practice.
