Messiaenfestival in Maastricht 20 t/m 23 november
In de hele westerse muziekwereld wordt dit jaar het feit herdacht dat de Franse componist Olivier Messiaen 100 jaar geleden geboren werd. Productiehuis Intro in situ , dat zich richt op muziek vanaf de 20ste eeuw, presenteert een meerdaags festival op verschillende locaties, bestaande uit 6 concerten een lezing en een filmvertoning.

Voor Messiaen was zijn katholieke geloof de inspiratiebron.
De organist, componist en ornitholoog die tot de grootste componisten van de vorige eeuw gerekend wordt zei daarover: Ik ben niet christelijk opgevoed, ik ben gelovig geboren.
De prachtige kerken op het Vrijthof: de Sint Jan en de Sint Servaas zijn dan ook het vanzelfsprekende decor voor het grootste deel van het programma.

Filmhuis Lumierè vertoont de film ‘Apparition of the Eternal Church’, een film die reacties van luisteraars beschrijft op de uitvoering van één van de orgelwerken van Messiaen. Dit werk wordt zondagmiddag uitgevoerd in de Sint Servaas. Het eigen huis van intro aan de Capucijnengang is toneel voor de uitvoering van het aangrijpende ‘Quatuor pour la fin du temps’.
Voor gelovigen en niet gelovigen een bijzonder evenement.

The world of music is commemorating this year the fact that French composer Olivier Messiaen was born a 100 years ago. The production outfit Intro in situ, interested in music starting from the 20th century, is organising a festival lasting several days, in various locations, consisting of six concerts, a lecture and a film screening.

Faith was for Messiaen a source of inspiration. However, non-believers can also enjoy his prolific organ music. The gothic band looking for an introduction to a concert or the film director who wishes to embolden his scenery – all of them will land up using the overpowering Meesiaen. It is understandable that the greatest part of the program will take place in the Vrijthof church Sint Jan en Sint Servaas. Pop fans know: church organs are the Marshall-towers of the past.

To get in the mood, cinema Lumière is showing ‘Apparition of the Eternal Church’, a documentary which shows the reactions of listeners to Messiaens’ organ work of the same name (watch the trailer on introinsitu.nl). ‘Apparition’ can be seen live on Sunday afternoon in the Sint Servaas church.

Organ players Marcel Verheggen, Jo Louppen, Anja Hendrikx en Willem Tanke, wind ensemble Raak and ensembles from Rotterdam and Amsterdams’ academies of music.
