A stage of Luminosity – Arno Coenen
Opening with Rutger Muller & Habitants
A Stage of Luminosity combines cultural heritage and new media. Viewmaster Projects invited artist Arno Coenen to make two video works that animate the digitised image archive of the Limburg glacier studio Frans Nicolas and Son.
The artist transforms the impressive historical design and working drawings, made mainly for stained glass windows, into two computer animations of brilliantly coloured light fields, three-dimensional effects, and kaleidoscopic patterns.
The two video works, shown on an almost fourteenmetre high and four-meter-wide column situated on the Vrijthof, are a contemporary tribute to the old craft and craftsmanship of Limburg stained glass artists.
A Stage of luminosity uses new media to translate imagery from the 19th and 20th centuries into the visual language of the 21st-century. This art project gives rise to new meanings and tells a layered pictorial story in which, in addition to themes such as faith, hope, love and death, light and colour also play a leading role.
The installation will be opened with a special performance on the 19th of September, 20.00. Composer Rutger Muller wrote a new composition called: ”The worship – A Live Performance for A Stage of Luminosity” for the occasion and will be performing it live together with HABITANTS. A performance in which sound and visuals melt together seamlessly.
